How to stay healthy while traveling

Traveling can be a ton of fun, but let’s face it, it can also wreck havoc on our health. But don’t worry, we’ve got your back! Here are some tips to keep you feeling healthy and happy no matter where your adventures take you.

Get your Shots

Getting vaccinated may not be the most enjoyable part of your travel planning, but it is important.

Most vaccines last a long time, so you only have to go through the process once and be set for the next 20 years.

Do remember, however, that some vaccines require two doses to be effective, and you need to have some time between the shots. Therefore, prepare for this well in advance.

The types of vaccines needed differ depending on what you already have and where you are going. Therefore, book an appointment with your doctor or a travel clinic and ask them what is required.

Also, make sure to refresh expired vaccines.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is very important. Something unexpected can happen during your trip, so it’s best to be prepared.

With travel insurance, you’ll be protected if anything goes wrong, like if you get sick or your trip gets cancelled. It’s also nice to know that you can get help when you’re far away from home.

So, make sure to get travel insurance for your next trip. It’s an easy  way to take care of yourself, your loved ones, and have a worry-free trip.

Keep your hands and space clean.

Thanks to the pandemic, we have all become pros at keeping our hands and space clean.

However, don’t forget to bring wipes and sanitizer for your phone and surroundings to keep them free from germs.

Additionally, before eating, remember to wash your hands or use sanitizer to avoid picking up any germs while traveling.

Stay hydrated

It may sound simple, but staying hydrated can be a real challenge while traveling.

One way to help you stay hydrated is to bring a water filter with you, so you can always have clean water at hand. Also, consider bringing some electrolytes if you’re headed to a hot destination.

Drinking enough water in colder countries is just as important, and easy to forget. It is not as tempting to drink water when you are in a colder environment.”

Get Some Zzz's

Did you know that getting enough sleep can really help you feel your best? When traveling, it is easy to get caught up in the excitement of being somewhere new and exciting, and it can feel like spending that limited time sleeping is a waste of time.

However, it is super important for keeping our bodies and minds in tip-top shape. It also makes the travel experience nicer if one is not completely exhausted all the time.

However, we are all different and both jet lag and newness of a place affect us in different ways. I usually always end up starting out with a nap in any new destination, while others need to get a feel for their surroundings first.

However you do it, make sure you don’t burn the candle at both ends and give your mind and body the break they deserve.”

Make sure you get your nutrients.

Eating healthy while traveling, especially on the road, can be quite challenging.

Incorporating a few extra fruits or vegetables into your daily meals can make a significant difference in your overall health and wellbeing.

Not only do they provide essential vitamins and minerals necessary for maintaining a healthy body, but also add some natural flavors and textures to your meals.

Instead of relying on processed and fast foods, try experimenting with new fruits and veggies that you’ve never tried before. You’ll be surprised how delicious and nutritious they can be! So, whether you’re on a long road trip or a short business trip, make it a point to include some fresh produce in every meal.

With a little creativity, you can make healthy eating on the go easy and enjoyable.

Get up and move

Walking is a great way to see a new place and stay in shape. There is nothing like getting a little lost in a city and accidentally finding its hidden gems. Just remember comfortable shoes and to drink enough water.

And if you’re feeling fancy, bring a yoga mat and some resistance bands for a quick workout. If you’re a runner, all you need is a good pair of running shoes.

Skin protection

Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen! I can’t stress this enough. A painful sunburn is not worth it. It can be painful in the short run and cause serious skin problems in the long run.

I always use at least 30 SPF and don’t forget to protect the lips and eyelids as they are extra sensitive. Also, remember to bring sunglasses, especially if you are going to a destination with snow or you are spending time on the ocean. Snow blindness is a real thing, and it can be extremely painful.”

Some last thoughts

Traveling is absolutely about having a good time, living in the moment, and forgetting some of the responsibilities we have at home.

The extent to which this is true depends on the length of the trip and the type of trip you are taking. Long-term travel does not feel the same as a short vacation, and you might find that it brings with it more feelings of responsibility.

However, after experiencing both over the past couple of decades, I have come to the conclusion that implementing a few healthy habits makes my overall travel experience much better.
